Thoughts on Garoppolo

I'm pretty sure 2nd rounders sign 4 year deals and have seen it written that Brady and Garoppolo's deal both end after the 2017 season

Pick the career: Bret or Aaron Boone

Gotta go Aaron. Yeah Bret probably had the better statistical career, but that Aaron Boone homer is an all-time moment from MLB Postseason history. That will forever be shown each October in memorable moment highlights. He's pretty much immortalized from that play and I think when it comes down to it, non-HOF, non-WS winning careers are pretty much interchangeable, so at least Aaron has this homer. Plus Aaron will always be linked to A-Rod joining the Yankees as well.

I don't like the Chris Capuano signing at all

Ryan Dempster's "retirement" presented the Sox with an opportunity to save some money and also allow some of their young arms a greater opportunity to provide value to the MLB club in 2014. I think the Red Sox blew the latter by signing Chris Capuano yesterday.

I understand for some organizations it's risky to go into a season banking on contributions from prospects, but this team is in a

Good stuff Terry - A couple thoughts - Since the Sox moved so quickly to fill the spot vacated by an above replacement level but below league average pitcher with another one, I get the feeling they consider the MLB roster to be more than the 25 allotted roster spots. That could be more of their philosophy than just making a move.

I think we're getting a pretty clear view this season of what the Sox want to do with their prospects. If a prospect can potentially offer above league-average performance as a rookie (Xander, JBJ - both have 2+ WAR projections for seemingly every system), something that is expensive, the Sox will push them. If a prospect is only expected to offer a lower level of production (Workman, Lavarnway) that is cheap, the Sox prefer to exhaust that player's minor league options to maximize depth beyond the MLB roster with MLB-caliber players.

Seems like the reaction to whether or not Capuano will be productive for the Sox has been mixed. If Capuano gets shelled, then the Sox could lose a win with this move, especially if you believe Workman's 2013 production more than his 2014 projections (which have him being less effective in '14).

PUP Timeframe

With yesterday's Gronk injury I wanted to double check the PUP rules as I was concerned that the Pats might have to put Gronk on IR for the entire 2014 season too.

In case anyone else was curious, here's how stretched the Pats can make the process if they need/want to:

Week 1-6 - Missed by being placed on PUP

Week 11 - Last week Gronk can start practicing

Week 14 - Last

***I spoke too soon. Some are saying up to 12 months recovery time...

Unless Gronk takes the NBA ACL injury recovery time frame for his return, I think the standard Week 1-6 deal is probably what we're looking at.

While driving to work today, I was trying to think back. Has a team ever won the Super Bowl without its two best non-QB players?
