The Coors Field Effect on This Year's Colorado Rockies

05/25/2014 6:06pm
last edited:05/28/2014 4:16pm

It is true almost every year, but especially in this young 2014 season, that the Colorado Rockies have an offense that no other team in the major leagues can hope to match, thanks to the obscene run environment of their home park Coors Field. I say obscene because in the history of major league stadiums (a history that really dates back to the 1910s with the construction of Wrigley Field, Fenwa

That's an interesting angle I hadn't considered. I'll check it out if I can.

Interesting stuff Marciano. I have become more fascinated by the Rockies since my girlfriend's parents live in Denver. When we go to visit I find myself getting unusually winded walking up a couple flights of stairs. To your knowledge has anybody done any studies about visiting pitchers' velocities and whether or not they can maintain it through 100 pitches? I couldn't even imagine pitching 6 or 7 innings without being able to acclimate to the lower oxygen levels without completely losing stamina by the 3rd or 4th inning.

Got it. No context - should have made a diving attempt and probably made the play. With context - smart play. Man on first, two outs is not a threatening situation but if he dives and misses it...

Bottom of the 10th, nobody on, two out. (It's down there in the corner, partially cut off but the information is present.) I just wanted to see if people thought he could catch it, not analyzing his decision, that's why I kept it practically free of comment.

Hello, George Springer (Goodbye, Robbie Grossman)

Yesterday the Houston Astros called up outfield prospect George Springer, one of the guys expected to lead this future-good club once the rebuilding process reaches its culmination. In other words, the future is here now. Not the boring fu

His OBP since 2012 is .328--not what I'd call very high. I don't know much about his defense except that it isn't favored by advanced statistics, which lines up with what I would expect, because I think his extreme shortness limits his range. The stolen bases are nice, they make up for his lack of power and average on-base skills. Fangraphs can think of 15 second basemen who have been better since the start of 2012.

I think Jose Altuve is much better than "serviceable" for the Astros or any team. He gets on base at a very high clip, has back-to-back 30+ steal seasons, and plays good defense. For what is probably the worst hitting position in the game, these attributes put him right up there with the best at his position.

(If you are wondering why this article focuses on the AL and NL West, that's because it appeared originally on http://midnight-baseball.com. Go there if you like this.)

I've waited two weeks and I can't wait any longer. There isn't much data to go on after half of April but I will find out what I can. I will take statistics from Fangraphs an

As always, great stuff Marciano. I love that you've pointed out that while 50 ABs is a small sample, we actually have 200 pitcher-batter encounters (pitches) to evaluate per player at this point.
