Yasiel Puig

Yasiel Puig seems destined to fall into the institution of baseball's perpetual conservatism trap. Puig has been labeled a free swinging, reckless and irresponsible prospect with unlimited upside. It seems to me that this characterization is often reserved for Latin players, regardless of their actual playing styles. Puig's criticisms on the field are similar to those heaped on Vlad Guerrero th

Emmanuel Sanders Negotiation

I'm curious why it is so outrageous that Sanders and his representation used informal hand shake deals to leverage offers from other teams. This is the only American Sports League without fully guaranteed contracts. I have no problem with Sanders looking for a better deal from a better team until his checks are being signed, and honestly even after that. This is the same group of owners that pu

You can never fault a guy for getting the most money possible during his short window in the NFL. I'm only outraged because he spurned the Patriots again to sign with their emerging rival.

3 Surprisingly Positive
Outcomes that could result from NHL teams restricting their players’
participation in the Olympics

Amidst
the grandiose opening ceremonies, the requisite waves of patriotism and the
delightful Sochi bashing in the media, an actual sports controversy has
reemerged in the first week and a half of the 2014 Winter Olympics.

This comment isn't related to the last couple but is something I wanted to include. I'm not sure if NBC is pleased with its return on the NHL TV deal. I'm also not sure if the NHL is pleased with NBC's coverage and/or what is has or has not done for the league. But as a fan (who has NBCSN) I can say that I've been 100% satisfied with NBC's coverage of the NHL.

Maybe its because national football and baseball broadcasts must appeal to a wider audience. Maybe its because I follow football and baseball more closely and therefore able to learn more from hockey broadcasts. I tune in for a few national regular season games and A TON of non-Bruins playoff games and have been very happy with the coverage over the last few years.

Aaron,

Interesting Point. I know that NHL scouts use the olympics to grade international players against the NHL's best- Mats Zuccharello made his first impression in the Vancouver games- so it is possible that restricting NHLers from playing could limit the international talent in the league in that way as well. Ultimately I think young international players would still come to the NHL. The KHL is a draw for guys like Kovalchuk and earlier Jagr because of the large salaries with lower taxes, but I would be surprised if the pay is as good for the median level players and the stars who are on their first contracts. I also think the players overstate the loss of playing for their country bit, because they could still actually play in the olympics as younger players before they join the NHL. Consider the average age of olympians and it sounds ostensibly reasonable. Most of those athletes don't get to compete in four olympics.
