One Way or Another, 'Horns Night in JerryWorld Will Make a National Statement

As I weaved through tailgate after tailgate last Saturday, there was an unspoken anxiety lying beneath every Longhorn fans' facial expression; for anyone with a realistic perspective knew that, with kickoff a mere hours away, that night's game against the Brigham-Young Cougars could be a rough one. However, nobody expected Texas to get demolished the way it did, as BYU steamrolled its way to a 41-7 victory in Austin, the worst home loss for the Longhorns since 1997. Well, except for Texas Coach Charlie Strong, who apparently told his players, "we're going to get embarrassed if we don't watch out," prior to kickoff.

Last week's loss encapsulated every Longhorn fan's fears: that this may be the worst season in decades for the 'Horns, which is saying something considering the past four disappointing seasons that eventually led to Strong's hiring. After all, if BYU can do this IN AUSTIN, what can we expect to happen when Texas faces the likes of UCLA, Baylor, and Oklahoma?

The Cougar's second half onslaught, which included four touchdowns in the third quarter alone, derailed Texas' attempt to avenge last year's 41-20 shellacking in Provo, UT, when Cougars' quarterback Taysom Hill ran for 259 yards. More so, it served as a preview of what the rest of the season may hold if Strong isn't able to turn things around with an unproven defense and an inexperience quarterback in sophomore Tyrone Swoopes. With tomorrow's game in JerryWorld in Dallas, TX against the UCLA Bruins and Heisman hopeful Brett Hundley jr. looming large, all eyes will be on how the burnt orange handle the pressure.

Of course, after last week's loss, one could argue that Texas is a clear underdog against the Bruins and has nothing to lose--and they'd be right. However, it would be foolish to lose sight of the fact that this is the first time the Longhorns will be playing on a nationally-televised stage since Mack Brown stepped down. With that in mind, expect Strong to pull out all the stops against UCLA in an attempt to make a statement and prove he is the right man for the job. Whether or not he succeeds in doing so remains to be seen, but I believe this will make for a far more interesting game in Dallas than most expect.
