Pittsburgh vs north carolina

PITTSBURGH (pk) vs. North Carolina

This week Pitt gets caught in the ultimate letdown spot, an average team coming off their game of the year victory over Notre Dame. UNC is a team on the rise winning their last 3 games after playing very tough against Miami and Virginia Tech. To me there are 2 keys to this game revolving around North Carolina's biggest weaknesses. Firstly and most importantly, the most glaring issue for UNC is their limited size in the defensive front. They have been pushed around by bigger teams, specifically looking at GT, South Carolina, and Miami, who were able to dominate in the trenches and completely control the tempo of the game. The result has been giving up nearly 200 ypg on the ground. Pitt has no such advantage in this one with a plodding ground game and no explosiveness from their ball carriers, and they should have difficulty establishing any ground game against the small but quick defensive front. Secondly, UNC was unable to replace Giovanni Bernard who was drafted into the NFL last year, and they were left with no consistent ball carrier to make plays. The offensive dynamic has changed for the better since the injury to quarterback Bryn Renner. While backup Marquise Williams does not possess the NFL caliber arm talent of Renner, he is a capable passer but more importantly provides a dynamic in the run game that was lacking in the first 2/3 of the season since he now handles roughly half of the ball carrying duties in an offense that has shifted from being pass heavy to run heavy. This shift in offensive philosophy plays well in this matchup with Pitt having a significantly worse run defense when compared to their pass defense. When UNC does decide to throw the ball they have a pair of targets for which Pitt has no answer, first round talent TE Eric Ebron and the emerging threat Quinshad Davis. Ebron has been dominant this season, and Davis has developed into a physical perimeter player who has become a favorite around the end zone with 8 touchdown catches this season. When all is said and done I think UNC comes out of Pittsburgh with the win.

Statistically, these teams appear to be pretty similar. But my gut tells me that UNC is more talented. Nice catch on Pitt coming off their emotion victory over ND.
