NFL Draft: Grades, Love/Hate Picks

05/11/2014 3:53am

Okay this is my team-by-team breakdown with draft grades. Also, I have my love and hate selections. Just because I list someone as love or hate doesn't mean I love or hate the player necessarily. It could also mean I think it's a good value pick or a reach. Comment if you want an explanation on my thoughts of why a player is on either list.

I figured the Patriots went in the right direction with DL, though Easley's knees make me nervous. Seattle's drafts never look super good, but you can't argue with the results so far. Really liked both first rounders for Ravens and Steelers; though will they be enough to help them bounce back this year with easier schedules?

I don't know what happened to the Redskins grade, but they get a C+ for their draft. No true impact players, but some solid picks throughout.

Pass on Blake Bortles and Sammy Watkins

The main takeaway from our NFL Draft study was that top-10 picks are extremely valuable. In fact, these players are the only ones in the NFL Draft who are expected to make a Pro Bowl during their career. So, if a team, like Jacksonville, picks a quarterback in the top-10, they are passing up

Eagles Make a Reach

05/09/2014 4:13pm
Replayed from Personal Sports Page
Greg Davis

The way Roger Goodell said his name was pretty much torture. Eagles fans had to be thinking that after trading back to the 26th pick and with USC wide receiver MARquise Lee falling into their laps, Lee was the easy decision. Instead, MARcus Smith was the name called for the Eagles. An outside linebacker/defensive end who can play both in a 3-4 defense and a 4-3 defense. That has to be the bigge

Yeah, I hated this pick for Philadelphia. He could end up being a productive player for them, but I thought there were much better options for them. Demarcus Lawrence and Jeremiah Attaochu were higher on my board and both could play 4-3 end or 3-4 OLB.

Thoughts on Easley to the Pats

05/09/2014 3:32pm

(I posted this as a comment in Club AlphaGo but wanted to include it in our NFL Draft Club discussion.)

1) If healthy, I really like the player. Top 15-20 talent (McShay gives him 2,2,1,1 for his positional traits, where 1 is elite). He could start at 3-tech in their base from day one and will definitely be on the field in the sub with Chandler Jones on the inside with Ninkovrabel and ano

The winning teams all have(at least) one thing they're good at: for SF it's linebackers of scrimmage players, for Seattle it's defensive backs, for New Orleans its receivers. For New England, when you think about it, its defensive linemen. Couldn't it be said that injuries destroyed the best Patriots defense in ten years last year? This feels like the right pick. Question: should the Patriots have gone for a 3-4 NT outright with Wilfork?
